GRADUATE PROGRAMS IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS

The department accomodates roughly 55 students in its graduate program. We typically award four Ph.D. degrees and fifteen Masters degrees each year.

In addition to the information presented below, students may wish to examine the information provided by the graduate school.

The Masters of Science Program

In Autumn 1998 we introduced the Professional Masters Program designed for those students who wish to learn skills beyond the undergraduate level that will allow them to take advantage of job opportunities especially in the region's technology, information and biotech industries, or proceed to graduate schools or employment elsewhere. The department also offers an online Master of Science degree.

The Doctor of Philosophy Program

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree in Applied Mathematics is primarily a research degree. The granting of the degree is based on proficiency in Applied Mathematics, and the ability to carry out an independent investigation as demonstrated by the completion of a doctoral dissertation. This dissertation must exhibit original mathematical contributions in a significant area of application. Students in the Ph.D. program can obtain an M.Sc. degree while working towards their Ph.D. degree.

The department also participates in an interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Computational Molecular Biology involving several departments in the biological and mathematical sciences, including Applied Mathematics.

Our recent Ph.D. graduates are working in the local computer and biotech industry in companies such as Cray and Immunex, in U.S. Government research at NASA, NOAA, and NCAR, and at major universities including NYU, Michigan, and Stanford.
